Back Forty Texas BBQ in Pleasant Hill is authentic Texas-style barbecue, and it's easy to see why it's racked up countless awards. The slow-smoked ribs--tender, smoky, and meaty--are a standout, earning accolades like "Best Ribs in the Nation" at the Nugget Rib Cook-Off. Their Grand Reserve BBQ sauce, a two-time national champ, adds a bold, spicy kick that elevates every bite. Brisket and tri-tip shine with deep flavor, while sides like creamy mac and cheese and fresh cornbread round out the meal. The rustic roadhouse vibe, complete with outdoor seating under a giant oak, feels like a Texas getaway. Service is warm and efficient, even during bustling weekends. With a legacy of excellence and a loyal following, Back Forty proves award-winning BBQ isn't just hype--it's a delicious reality. There's also a convenient Takeout/Pick up entrance on the street side. Easy to pullup and go.

This is our second time ordering from this restaurant. And hear me out - there is potential! I really really REALLY think some seasoning could go a long way. The meat could use seasoning, but at least I can smother that in bbq sauce (which is actually pretty good). But if this restaurant can take anything away from this review I just really want you all to upgrade the baked beans. Your baked beans are so bland.....and could actually be good if you took a more southern baked beans route and added seasoning (I clearly like my food seasoned) and some brown sugar! Without a Texas Roadhouse nearby I really wanna see this small business thrive, but what stops me from visiting more frequently is how bland most of the food is. Small tweaks could make a difference & then I'd be happy to come more often!

My family and I wanted to eat BBQ my father recommended this place to us. We has lunch today and parking was easy. We entered and it was busy for a Sunday. We were seated immediately by a lady named Stefanie. She was quite attentive with her whole section always coming around asking how everything was and if we needed anything etc. She provided wonderful service. Thank you Stefanie Food is delicious. Did not take long to get food, it arrived to our table hot and delicious (see photos) my family and I will definitely be back Highly recommended!

I found this place while looking around Yelp and based on some of the pictures I really wanted to try it out. We made a reservation ahead of time and was seated immediately. Bbq options are amazing. Portions are also huge! Loved their brisket!

I ordered through DD tonight and am so pleased with what I received!! Wow, tonight's meal brought back a sense of nostalgia, talk about going back almost two decades. The food was reminiscent of what it used to be! The ribs were tender and fell off the bone, the brisket was oh so moist and tender!! The sides were alright, but with meat being that well seasoned and cooked to perfection I didn't care. Also, I called to ask some questions before I ordered and the staff were SUPER friendly!! I will definitely be back more frequently!! I'm pleased!! When I bake my ribs at home I miss the smoky flavor, it's a nice treat for me to eat great ribs that I don't have to cook! I didn't take pics of all of the food I got. Chicken could have been more charred? Excellent food!!

Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: Casual Value: Good Based on all the reviews, seems like it's hit or miss but I had a good experience. We ordered the dinner sized plates of beef ribs, pork ribs (award winning), tortilla soup, Caesar salad, and mac and cheese. This was enough to feed 5 of us. I thought the pork ribs were flavorful, juicy, tender and could see how they could win an award. We all agreed these were better than the beef ribs. Beef ribs were still juicy but I can see how some people could have a "dry experience". The tortilla soup missed the mark and so did the Mac and cheese. I like my Mac and cheese more al dente with some kind of breading, but the Mac and cheese here was pretty soggy and lacked flavor. The service was solid where multiple staff members checked on us to ensure we were having a good experience. We could've had a bit more attentiveness from our waitress for refills, but understand they were busy. Portion sizes were good, especially the pork ribs. I'd come back again to satisfy my Texas bbq cravings, but it didn't have enough of the wow factor to get the full five stars from me.

Went to NB40 for a retired employee get-together lunch on a weekday. Our group used to meet here periodically pre-COVID and recently resumed our reunions. The 25 of us were seated in a rear room providing some privacy for us and also the rest of the diners - who wants to have a bunch of loud people interrupt their lunch right?!? We had great service on a pre-set lunch with choice of one meat item with sauce on the side, bread & butter, potato salad, French fries, non-alcoholic drink, and ice cream. I chose the tasty BBQ Pork Ribs (4) that were nicely prepared with meat easily falling off the bone. The service was excellent with the main waiter helping us take a picture while the entire staff and management did not rush us out - we were there for almost three hours - benefits of a quiet weekday lunch. NB40 has a nice big parking lot and is conveniently located near I680. The place has been around for at least 40+ years at this location. Great place for a gathering, excellent service, and tasty BBQ.

Today we came for my husband's birthday dinner. Prices have gone up again. I was told if I got the Texas combo, unlike what their description says in their old menu, that it is actually not two full portions of meat but just too two kinds of meat but not too full portions. I got their for pork ribs lunch platter or $22 with two sides. The award-winning pork ribs were not that tender at all. It was actually a bit dry and not very flavorful. I found that I had to use the barbecue sauce to make it taste better. The size were good portions but the coleslaw is too sour and has too much sauce. My husband got their beef ribs dinner plate which is four ribs for 32 dollars. He enjoyed it but the ribs aren't very meaty although big bones. I tried one and it has more flavor than their award winning pork ribs.

I've been meaning to try this Back Forty location for a couple of years now. I finally got to go for Happy Hour in December. The last time I went to a Back Forty was way back in the day, maybe 20 years ago when I was kid they had one in the Dublin/San Ramon area. Happy Hour is M-F from 3-6pm. Appetizers are $3 off, and there's also a few deals on their drinks. We tried the Smokehouse Sampler which has pork ribs, pulled pork, beef brisket & a sliced sausage link. The food portion was enough for two people. We also got a couple of drinks. Great place to come for food and libations.
